Since 1974, Ambler Savings Bank is proud to be the Hometown Financial Center and a contributing partner
to the Schwenksville community. We are the proud sponsor of the Perkiomen Trail and committed to preserving
the rich history of Schwenksville.
A Brief History of Schwenksville
The borough of Schwenksville is located along the Perkiomen Creek, at the
intersection of state Routes 29 and 73, about five miles north of US Route 422,
the main highway from Philadelphia to Reading. Schwenksville’s history began
in 1684, when the Lenni-Lenape Indians ceded to William Penn the land along
the Perkiomen Creek.
Schwenksville officially became a borough in April 6, 1903. Area industry
included ice harvesting, the manufacturing of men’s clothing, cigar-making,
hotels, restaurants, and community banking. Until World War II, the population
of Schwenksville showed only a slow growth. Since then many businesses have
come and gone, however, the residential population has increased substantially.
Many churches and homes within the borough reflect the German origin of many
early settlers. Main Street has several fine examples of Victorian architecture.
Founder Jacob Schwenk’s home, built in 1845, still exists today.
Despite its relatively small size, Schwenksville has shown a steady interest
in progress. The borough has an active volunteer fire company, a public water
system, public sewers, a community library, a weekly newspaper, and a modern
school system.
Today, Schwenksville and its surrounding area is an increasingly desirable
place to live. Thriving new developments now appear on formerly vacant land.
Residents are drawn, in part, by Schwenskville’s natural beauty and many
recreational activities. Residents can enjoy wonderful views of the Perkiomen
Creek from the newly opened Perkiomen Trail or ski the local Spring Mountain
Ski Resort.
The history of Schwenksville, however, is continually being written by those
who call the town “home”. The future challenges us to learn what to build and
what to preserve, so that we, too, may leave something of ourselves and our
dreams to those who follow.
